She started out working in the field with the Forest Service back out in Humboldt County California, where she discovered her love for birdwatching. She enjoyed being out in the field hiking through the wilderness, conducting vegetation surveys for Marbled Murrelet habitat in the Redwoods (where she met her husband,) walking Northern California's rivers to study the American Dipper, and trekking for miles to track and trap the American marten.

She was introduced to birding by a friend who was an avid birder. And so, the love affair began. She got more involved in point count surveys and bird banding and would head out on her own to see what birds she discovered.

She moved to Northern Virginia around 2010 and spends most of her time writing, birding, and being a parent to a spunky 10-year-old girl.

When not writing or parenting, Jessica spends her time swimming laps and exploring the great outdoors, whether she's mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, birding, or hunting for berries and mushrooms. She prefers to spend as little time as possible indoors. And she never leaves home without her binoculars.

Jessica lives in Reston with her husband, daughter, and their little Rat Terrier, Patches.
