ASNV will have its first in-person Audubon Afternoon in more than two years on June 5. Four live owls will be the stars of the show. We’ll gather informally starting at 2:30PM in the cafeteria of the National Wildlife Federation Building, 11100 Wildlife Center Drive, in Reston. At 3:00PM we’ll have a brief Annual Meeting where we will elect officers and directors. See below for the business meeting agenda and information on board candidates.

Our main program will begin at 3:15PM, when Secret Garden Bird and Bees will present “A Year in the Life of an Owl,” featuring four live owls for you to see and photograph: a Barn Owl, a Screech Owl, a Great Horned Owl, and a Barred Owl. This is an event the whole family will enjoy! We welcome any food and drink you would like to share with everyone during the informal portion of the program.

“A Year in the Life of an Owl” follows our region’s four resident owls from winter through fall. We’ll get a peek into their romantic courtships. We’ll see the challenges of raising young and the difficult transition from nestling to fledgling. And finally, we’ll see the quiet time when the young seek out their place in the world and the adults can (almost) relax. Our four Owl Ambassadors will help us tell the story. You’ll meet Scarlett (barred owl), Hodor (great horned owl), Phantom (barn owl), and Kvosir (eastern screech owl) in person, learn about each species and a little about their personal lives in captivity. You might even get to take a few selfies!

The agenda for the business meeting is as follows:

  • Results of the Birdathon competition.

  • Vote on a proposed amendment to the ASNV Bylaws to provide that if a person is elected to fill a vacancy on the Board of Directors for a remaining term of less than one year, that partial term is not counted for purposes of the three-term limit on consecutive terms as a member of the Board. The text of the amendment is here.

  • A brief explanation of ASNV’s budget for fiscal year 2023. The budget is here.

  • Recognition of Officers and Board Members whose terms are expiring.

  • Election of Officers and Directors of ASNV. The slate of candidates recommended by the ASNV Nominating Committee is below.

  • Invitation to join ASNV’s committees.
