Position Description
State Executive Director, Virginia
National Audubon Society
As part of its strategic
planning process, the National Audubon Society is opening an office in every
state. Currently, we are seeking a
highly motivated individual with a passion for conservation of natural
ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife and their habitats, to direct a
new program in the state of Virginia.
Position
summary
The Executive Director will be the chief executive
officer for Audubon Society of Virginia, and will supervise all NAS facilities
and programs in the state.
Relationships
The Executive Director
reports to Glenn Olson, NAS Senior Vice President and Director of Field
Operations, who is based in Sacramento, CA.
The position will also be responsible in the future to a State Board of
Directors, which will be formed during the first year of the program’s
operation. The Executive Director and
all employees of Audubon Society of Virginia will be employees of the National
Audubon Society.
The Executive Director will also work with National
Audubon staff and other state directors throughout the country in implementing
NAS policy objectives.
Position
priorities
·
Work
with representatives of Audubon chapters within Virginia and NAS to form a
statewide Board of Directors.
·
Develop
plans in Virginia to support achievement of Audubon’s “2020 Vision” to build a
national network of environmental education centers and create a culture of
conservation.
·
Work
closely with NAS, and the state Board to continue the development of the
strategic plan for Audubon Society of Virginia, including development of
environmental education centers. Implement the plans for and initiate
development of one or more centers in Virginia.
·
Serve
as a liaison between NAS and the chapters and work to build sound relationships
with and between the chapters.
·
Personnel. Recruit, train and retain
skilled and experienced staff members who are committed to accomplishing NAS
and Audubon Society of Virginia goals in Virginia.
·
Program. Develop and implement plans for Audubon educational and conservation
programs and centers within the state.
Effectively manage these programs and centers as they grow.
·
Financial Take a leadership role in fundraising efforts with individuals,
foundations, and corporations, including cultivation of major donor
prospects. Develop and administer
Audubon Society of Virginia’s budget and ensure the organization’s fiscal
responsibility.

Relationships.
1.
Keep
chapters informed on NAS priorities and assist chapters with their
conservation, education, and advocacy efforts.
2.
Coordinate
with NAS and other State Directors on matters of national or regional concern.
3.
Make
effective use of the strengths of the members of the Board of Directors, that a
strong board may help make Virginia a leader in conservation.
4.
Build
and maintain strong working relationships with other conservation organizations
within Virginia.
5.
Encourage
and make effective use of volunteers.

Advocacy. Serve as Audubon’s principal
spokesperson in Virginia. Be a visible
and effective advocate for Audubon priorities in the legislative and regulatory
arenas
Background
·
Education: a Bachelor’s degree is required.
An advanced degree in science, law, public administration or a natural
resource-related field is desired.
·
Experience: Progressively responsible
experience with private, non-profit, or public sector organizations in four or
more of the following areas:

Management
2.
Budgeting
3.
Development
including major donor relationships
4.
Experience
in conducting a capital campaign
5.
Making
presentations to groups.
·
Is
strongly committed to conservation focused on birds, other wildlife and their
habitats and to Audubon’s vision.
·
Is
a strategic planner.
·
Can
raise funds, budget and manage effectively.
·
Is
a consensus builder and leader.
·
Has
good oral and written communication skills
·
Has
built programs and a board of directors
