CONSERVATION PROJECTS

The Audubon Society of Northern Virginia (ASNV) conservation programs are scientifically-based activities to learn more about the distribution of birds and other wildlife in Northern Virginia. Wherever possible, we work in partnership with other conservation organizations and public agencies to help protect and enhance important habitat areas.

Northern Virginia Bird Survey (NVBS)

In June 2008, the 15th Annual Northern Virginia Bird Survey (NVBS), a comprehensive study of breeding birds, will be conducted at 25 Northern Virginia sites. Thanks to the efforts of 228 volunteers, over 136,000 birds have been counted.

The NVBS database contains over 73,000 records, each with ten categories of information about an individual bird species at a single survey point.  The data is shared with resource managers of parks and other public lands, who rely on it for tracking trends in breeding bird numbers and distributions, and as baseline data for behavioral studies, comprehensive park inventories, development of resource management plans, and land use decisions.

Below are the results from the 2007 and 2006 NVBS.

How can you help?
Please consider volunteering for the NVBS. Each grid point takes only five minutes to survey and you can survey anytime in June of each year, as long as it’s between dawn and about 8:30 am. This information is essential for the protection of critical habitats. Please contact ASNV at 703-256-6895 or info@audubonva.org for more information.

The highly anticipated publication The Birds in Northern Virginia - Documenting the Nature of Change is now available! Please stop by the office to review a copy. Due to the limited number of copies, distribution is limited.

Many thanks to Carolyn Williams, Jim Waggener, Carl Kikuchi and numerous other volunteers for the countless hours devoted to this program.
