Following are a few of the ASNV committees that can always use additional volunteers:

Education:

Workshops - Volunteers who assist with LEAPP®  -- "Learn, Enjoy, Appreciate, Preserve, and Protect”-- will contribute workshop ideas, contact prospective lecturers, determine class location and coordinate with other ASNV groups as appropriate. Walks and field trips - Experienced volunteers are needed to lead walks and field trips.  Bird walks and field trips take place throughout the region and throughout the year.  If you have a favorite birding spot, close to home or within about a 3-hour drive please contact Carol Hadlock, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Conservation:

Audubon At Home - This program trains ambassadors to advise property owners, including schools, businesses and churches, to improve landscape by using native plants. Wildlife Sanctuary certification is awarded to properties that meet certain criteria. Anyone interested in becoming and AAH ambassador or requesting a visit by an ambassador should contact ASNV naturalist Cliff Fairweather, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Wildlife surveys and counts – As part of its citizen science activities, ASNV coordinates a number of wildlife surveys and counts (listed below). The information from these activities is shared with federal, state, and local government managers of public lands and wildlife, who use it in wildlife management and developmental planning. Some of these surveys have been conducted continuously since 1994, and provide invaluable data for tracking trends locally. Bird data are submitted to national databases, such as eBird, which is maintained by Cornell University, and used for ornithological studies.

Occoquan and Meadowood wildlife surveys – Volunteers conduct monthly surveys for birds, other wildlife, and plants at the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Woodbridge and the Meadowood Recreation Area on Mason Neck. The surveys are conducted on scheduled Wednesdays. To volunteer contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or (703) 567-3555.

Christmas Bird Count and Winter Waterfowl Survey – Whether you are a beginning or experienced birder, these annual counts in December and January are great opportunities to get out with fellow birders to see what birds are in our area in winter. We usually start recruiting for these events in October but feel free to contact the ASNV office any time at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Butterfly and dragonfly surveys – Volunteers conduct surveys for butterflies and dragonflies on Fridays from April through October in four locations: Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Meadowood Recreation Area, Julie Metz Wetlands, and Occoquan Regional Park. In addition, there is an annual butterfly count at the end of June/beginning of July. To volunteer contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Northern Virginia Bird Survey - This scientific survey of birds in Northern Virginia is conducted annually in June. The survey began in 1994 and collects data at hundreds of points at the height of the breeding season. The data show how their numbers are being affected by development. If you would like to participate in this citizen science project, contact the ASNV office at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Advocacy:

ASNV works to influence public policy at the local, state and federal levels.  ASNV representatives prepare and present comments, testimony and other materials in support of conservation of natural resources and environmental stewardship. Volunteers participate in public meetings, meet with elected officials and advocate stronger environmental policies with local, state and federal government officials. To get involved, contact Glenda Booth, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Communications:

Help represent ASNV by staffing booths. ASNV participates at various events throughout Northern Virginia throughout the year. This is an opportunity to help educate the public not only about ASNV but also about environmental and conservation issues. If you can help set up and staff the ASNV booth, please contact the ASNV office at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 703-438-6008.
