If you have ever wondered about why and how birds sing and call, you are not alone.
Andrew Dolby, Vice President and President-elect of the Virginia Society of Ornithology, will provide some insight when he speaks at Audubon Society of Northern Virginia's Nature Night on Sunday, June 27 at 3 p.m. Dolby will speak about the form and function of songs and calls and how ornithologists study avian vocalizations.
Dolby is Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg. He is currently working on new ways to measure stress in birds.

Research biologist Fletcher Smith will talk about Hope, a whimbrel that has flown more than 10,000 miles on its migratory journey, and other birds that are being tracked as part of a collaborative effort by The Center for Conservation Biology and the Virginia chapter of The Nature Conservancy to help conserve the declining shorebird species.
