Congressman James P. Moran (D-VA) received the new Audubon at Home Community Conservation Award in recognition of his long and exemplary service to environmental protection and for his commitment to bringing conservation home to America’s communities.
The award was given by the National Audubon Society (Audubon) and its local Chapter, the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia (ASNV). Along with Moran's exemplary voting record on environmental issues, he has been a driving force in helping the Audubon at Home program to inspire, educate and assist property owners across the country conserve and restore natural environment and its native flora and fauna. “Congressman Moran has long been a dependable champion for the health and beauty of our world,” said Audubon President John Flicker. “And his support for Audubon at Home has helped thousands to make their backyards and other green spaces healthier for people and nature.” Moran’s award is living testament to the Audubon at Home program’s ability to remake environments for the benefit of people and nature. Congressman Moran helped to put in the native plants and shrubs to create the garden at Arlington Presbyterian Church on Earth Day 2007. Since then, volunteers from the Church have cultivated a successful wildlife habitat that is both manicured and welcoming to people, birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. It has become a green oasis in a concrete-dominated urban environment. The beautiful site and stories of local efforts afford excellent opportunities to highlight the value of Audubon at Home and community conservation efforts to restoring the environment in Northern Virginia and across America. Audubon at Home is supported by funding from the Agriculture Department’s Natural Resource Conservation Service.
