. At the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia's (ASNV) 2009 annual summer membership meeting, the Board of Directors honored Judy Smith with its first “ASNV High Flier” award. The award recognizes Judy for ten years of committed service to the organization. Her volunteer service includes quiet, behind-the-scenes office work, including organizing the day-to-day financial records. An accountant by profession, Judy is nonetheless willing to do whatever is asked of her. She has served as: - hostess at Audubon at Home events,
- pitched in at AAH plantings, and
- organized hearty luncheons for cold volunteers at several Christmas Bird Counts.
When not helping ASNV, Judy provides similar services to a local Habitat for Humanity group, and helps out the Northern Virginia Bird Club. What keeps Judy coming to the office week after week? “First, the people,” she notes simply. Over the years, she has had great relationships with lots of Audubon members and staff employees, and she enjoys the opportunity to spend time with them. “I am a Helpful Hannah – too much so, according to my husband.” It's clear she takes great satisfaction in doing something that really needs to be done, especially when no one else is willing or able to take it on. Judy is quick to emphasize, however, that she gains as much as she gives by volunteering. She has learned a lot of valuable computer skills by working in ASNV’s office. It has really been fun, and it “keeps my brain going.” Judy did not come to ASNV out of a particularly strong affinity for birds. Rather she was brought to a meeting by a friend years ago. So does she have any interest in birds? She rather grudgingly admits enjoying the bold and colorful birds, like the Green Jay and the Great Kiskadee that she encountered years ago on a trip to South Texas. But, she has no interest in “the flitters” – sparrows and warblers that just try way too hard to hide themselves. Any advice for people who might be thinking of volunteering? “It’s worthwhile, at whatever level. There’s not enough money in the world to pay for everything that needs to be done. So volunteer. Expand your mind. Do something you enjoy.” Click here to find out about ASNV volunteer opportunities or contact ASNV at
