Long Branch Nature Area

ASNV naturalist Elaine Franklin and Charlotte Friend of the Northern Virginia Bird Club will lead this walk through a steam valley that hosts a variety of migrant and nesting birds, including Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, Acadian Flycatchers, and Yellow-billed Cuckoos.

Getting there: Take Rt. 50 east from Falls Church to Carlin Springs Rd. Go south on Carlin Springs about half a mile. Turn left and follow the drive to the Nature Center parking lot.

Prince William County Migratory Bird Count

This is the longest running annual spring bird count in this area.Held at the height of spring migration, these counts have averaged 130 species (with highs of 140 or more).If you want to share in the excitement and contribute to our understanding of local birds, contact Jim Waggener, 703-567-3555, for details.

Spring Migration on the Delaware Bay Featuring Horseshoe Crabs and Red Knots

Ray Smith and Fred Bogar will lead a weekend birding trip along the Delaware Bay.

Potential highlights include Red Knots in breeding plumage, Brant, nesting plovers, and migrating shorebirds and warblers. Rooms are reserved at the Beacon Motel in Lewes, Delaware (514 E Savannah Rd, Lewes,DE 19958) and cost about $99/night with tax.

Call 302-645-4888 to make a reservation. There is a restaurant next to the motel where breakfast is available. Lunch will be with the group on Saturday. Dinner is on your own. Bring snacks and gear for the weather. If you have a scope, bring it along for better views of the shorebirds and waterfowl. Meet at the motel at 3PM on Friday, May 16 for some afternoon birding. The fun continues all day Saturday and Sunday morning, with a break for sleep Saturday night.

Kurt Gaskill (703-768-2172) will lead this joint field trip sponsored by ASNV and Friends of Dyke Marsh. Lots of special sightings are possible, including Warbling Vireo, nesting Osprey, Common Loon, Gray-cheeked Thrush, Marsh Wren, and Lincoln’s and White-crowned Sparrows.

Getting there: From Alexandria travel south on George Washington Parkway. Follow the sign for the Dyke Marsh/Belle Haven picnic area and meet at the first parking lot.

Joanne and David Bauer will take us on a tour of a natural area that is practically their own backyard. They are hoping to spot Wood Thrushes and perhaps a Barred Owl.

Getting there: Meet at the Glade Pool parking lot on Glade Drive at Soapstone Drive, and we will explore the upper end of the stream valley.
